By Sinead Kinsella, 5th year full-time student at The Institute of Education
This year, I was delighted to learn that The Institute of Education was offering 4th and 5th year students the opportunity to take part in a life saving programme run by St Colmcille’s Life Saving Club.
Through completing this course I have been given a great opportunity for self-improvement. The confidence I have gained simply from knowing I am able to save someone else’s life has not only made me more confident in my ability in the water, but in life in general.
To me, this course has not only been a test of my physical ability to swim, dive, and correctly carry out a rescue, but a test of my will power, my ability to stay calm and perform under pressure.
Without the support of the school it would have been much more difficult for me to pursue a course like this. The course was scheduled to fit in with the school class timetable, so it was feasible to participate and it provided a welcome break from school and study.
Participating in the course has also been a brilliant way of getting to know people outside of the classroom environment.
I would highly recommend a life saving course to anyone who has the interest and commitment to learn a new life skill.
