Twenty three 4th year students from the Institute braved the wind and rain last weekend when they traveled to Westport, Co. Mayo for a weekend of hill walking and adventure!
The trip was part of the ‘Adventure Journey’ challenge of the Gaisce Awards, which the students are taking part in during their 4th year programme.
Accompanied by 4th Year Head, Orla Ni Shuilleabhain and Guidance Counsellor Mary Dorgan, the group had an action packed weekend.
The first day of hiking proved to be a rather wet affair, with lots of wind and rain. However, everyone kept their spirits up, and a home cooked dinner in the hostel and fun and team building activities that evening certainly lifted everyone’s spirits!
Much to everyone’s relief the sun came out on Monday morning, and shone brightly throughout the 18 km hike.
During the walk the group was accompanied by two tour guides, who gave students an introduction to map reading skills and the nature of the area.
Students and teachers arrived home at 10pm on the Monday evening train tired, but delighted to have completed such an significant part of their Gaisce Award.
We hope everyone had a great time and we’ll be announcing the results of the photography competition that we ran over the weekend for students shortly!
