Want to be a Primary School Teacher?

Our Irish For Primary Teaching course is designed for students who want to apply for the PME (Professional Master in Education) post graduate degree, but need to first meet the Irish language requirement.

This course is ideal for students who are no longer in full-time secondary school education and may not have studied Irish in a while.

Over 29 weeks, our expert Irish teacher Nuala Uí Cheallaigh, will guide and support students of all levels in order to help them build confidence and succeed in the Irish exam.

As part of this course, you’ll also get support for the TEG Oral exam – at no extra charge.

May Revision Courses

Intense exam preparation.

The course will run over 29 weeks, commencing September 2026. The course will include all aspects of the Leaving certificate course, the written the listening and the oral aspects. There is a crossover on the oral work for the leaving Certificate exam and the TEG exam. Students will be offered the opportunity to attend oral preparation tutorial and partake in a mock oral before their exams.

Course features:

2 hour online class once per week.
Onsite (or at home) mock exams in March.
Mock oral after Christmas.
Attendance at TEG Course Free of Charge.
Follow on task and activities are provided for you to engage with at your own pace and timeframe.
Direct access to tutor to deal with any individual issues or questions that you may have.

FAQ

Are the class notes available online?

No, a hard copy will be provided to each student from the teacher for the subjects they enrol in.

How much is the fee per class?

Please refer to the fees table for a list of fees.

Is attendance at courses monitored?

Yes, students are required to sign a roll sheet at each class they attend. The Institute however accepts no responsibility for students who fail to attend class.

Are the classes conducted ‘lecture style’ or are students free to ask questions?

Our classes are interactive and our teachers use a variety of methods to ensure that students can ask questions and contribute to the class.

My son/daughter cannot attended the course. Can we buy the notes?

No. Teaching is a central part of all our courses. The notes are to facilitate recall and revision of the day’s work covered by the teacher.

Will I have access to recordings of the live classes?

Yes, recordings of classes will be available after each live class is completed. These can then be replayed as a revision aid.

Who will be teaching this course

The teacher for this course is Nuala Uí Cheallaigh.

Nuala Uí Cheallaigh is an Irish teacher with over 25 years teaching experience.

Nuala’s unique teaching style inspires students to be more confident and self-assured in the subject. She provides her students with the skills necessary to master both the Irish language and the requirements of the syllabus. Nuala focuses this class on bringing you from your current ability, giving you the tools and confidence to achieve at the the honours Irish paper.

Nuala has a deep understanding of the Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate examination process having worked as a corrector with the State Examinations Commission (SEC) for 19 years.

Nuala holds a BA from University College Dublin, a H.dip from Trinity College Dublin and an M.Ed from the University of Ulster.

She works as an Academic Tutor on the University of Limerick’s teacher training programme. In addition, she is a post primary, (school) student teacher placement tutor with the University of Limerick and previously with the National University of Ireland Maynooth. Nuala has also provided Dianchúrsa Gaeilge for students of Dublin City University’s B.Ed programme.

Nuala works with the publishers on the creation of Irish textbooks for the new Junior Cycle syllabus, the Leaving Certificate syllabus, and was awarded the All-Island Entrepreneur Educator of the Year in 2007.

When do classes take place?

This is a weekly online course. The classes are held every Monday evening at 7pm. You can see the weekly schedule here.

Who is this course for?

The course is for students wishing to enrol on a Professional Masters in Education PME (Primary Teaching), post graduate degree, but have not achieved at least a H4 in their Leaving Cert Irish Exam.

This course is designed specifically for students who are no longer in full time second level education and who may not have studied Irish in a number of years.
