Which Should I Choose?
Higher or Ordinary?
It’s one of the most common questions students and parents ask, and there’s no single right answer, it depends on where you currently stand with Maths and what you’re aiming for.
Why students stick with Higher Level
Higher Level Maths is the only Leaving Cert subject that carries 25 bonus CAO points for a H6 grade or above.
Many third-level courses, particularly in engineering, science, computing and business, also list Higher Level Maths as a requirement or strong preference, even where it isn’t compulsory.
Why some switch to Ordinary Level
Maths can take up a disproportionate amount of study time relative to other subjects.
If a student is consistently struggling to keep pace with Higher Level content, and that pressure is coming at the cost of other subjects, Ordinary Level can be the more strategic choice, particularly for CAO courses that don’t require Higher Level Maths specifically.
Timing matters. The earlier a switch is made, the easier the transition. Ordinary and Higher Level content overlaps for much of Junior Cycle and the early part of the Leaving Cert course, but diverges more as the syllabus progresses, particularly around topics like calculus and complex numbers. Making the decision in 5th Year, rather than partway through 6th Year, gives a student more room to adjust.
What to weigh up
- Current grades and how consistently they’re being achieved, not just a single good or bad result
- Whether intended CAO courses require or reward Higher Level Maths specifically
- How much study time Maths is taking relative to other subjects
- Confidence and stress levels, since sustained difficulty with one subject can affect performance across the board
At the Institute of Education, weekly Maths grinds are available at both Higher and Ordinary Level, so switching levels doesn’t mean switching provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
What levels of Maths do you teach?
We teach Higher Level Maths across all six year groups, from 1st to 6th Year. Ordinary Level Maths grinds are available for 6th Year students. Junior Cycle Maths (1st–3rd Year) is taught to a common standard, reflecting how the Junior Cycle course itself is structured before the Higher/Ordinary Level split becomes relevant at exam time.
Where can I attend Maths grinds?
Depending on your year group, Maths grinds are available online and at our Leeson Street, Killester, Swords, Westmanstown and Dalkey locations. Use the filters above to see which options are available for your year, or check the individual weekly grinds page for full details.
Can I attend some classes online and others in person?
Yes. You can mix and match online and onsite classes across different subjects. However, once you’re enrolled in a specific class, you can only attend that class, whether online or in person.
How much do Maths grinds cost?
Fees depend on year group and how many subjects you take. For one subject, prices range from €1,020 (1st–4th Year) up to €1,195 (6th Year) for the full 29-week course. What’s included with Maths grinds?
Every student gets live teaching from experienced Maths teachers, free class recordings available to rewatch until the end of the State Exams, exam-focused notes, and examiner-informed insight into how questions are marked.
Are Maths classes recorded if I miss one?
Yes. Every class, online or onsite, is recorded and available to rewatch through Moodle, right up until the end of the State Exams. This applies whether you’re enrolled in an in-person or online class.
What topics are on Leaving Cert Maths Paper 1 and Paper 2?
Paper 1 generally covers Algebra, Functions, Complex Numbers, Calculus, Financial Maths, and Sequences and Series. Paper 2 generally covers Co-Ordinate Geometry, Geometry, Trigonometry, Probability, and Statistics. Exact topic weighting can vary slightly year to year, our teachers cover the full syllabus across both papers regardless of level.
Can I change my subject or class time during the year?
Yes. We allow class changes up to Easter, subject to availability. Contact our office on 01 661 3511 to arrange a change.
