Accounting | Grinds & Courses

Accounting rewards consistent, methodical practice more than any other Leaving Cert subject, marks are won and lost on layout, workings and the marking scheme, not just the right final answer. Our expert teachers focus on continuous exam-standard practice with a close eye on how questions are actually marked.

What To Expect

Financial vs Management Accounting

Leaving Cert Accounting is built around two related but distinct areas, and confidence in both matters more than being strong in just one.

Financial Accounting

Covers preparing final accounts for sole traders, clubs, farms and service firms, along with depreciation, adjustments, and increasingly, company accounts.

Layout matters as much as arithmetic here, marks are awarded for correct structure and workings, not just the final figure.

Management Accounting

Covers costing, budgeting and ratio analysis, tools used to interpret a business’s performance rather than simply record its transactions.

This section rewards understanding what the numbers actually mean, since interpretation questions are common alongside pure calculation.

Layout and workings carry real marks. Accounting is marked closely against a structured scheme, so presenting workings clearly and following the correct format is often worth as much as getting the right answer.
What to focus on
At the Institute of Education, weekly Accounting classes focus on continuous exam-standard practice with close attention to the marking scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level of Accounting do you teach?

We teach Higher Level Accounting only, from 5th Year onwards. Accounting only exists as a Leaving Cert subject, there’s no Junior Cycle equivalent. We do not currently offer a dedicated Ordinary Level Accounting grinds option.

Is Accounting available online?

6th Year has one online Weekly Grinds class (Wednesday 19:00). 5th Year Weekly Grinds is currently Leeson Street only, with no online option. The August Preparation Course for Accounting is Leeson Street only at present.

Can I attend some classes online and others in person?

Yes. You can mix and match online and onsite classes across different subjects. Once enrolled in a specific class, though, you can only attend that class, whether online or in person.

How much do Accounting grinds cost?

Fees depend on year group and how many subjects you take. For one subject, prices range from €1,020 (5th Year) up to €1,195 (6th Year) for the full 29-week course. Taking multiple subjects reduces the average cost per subject.

What’s included with Accounting grinds?

Every student gets live teaching, free class recordings available to rewatch until the end of the State Exams, and comprehensive notes with fully worked solutions to recent exam questions.

Are Accounting classes recorded if I miss one?

Yes. Every class, online or onsite, is recorded and available to rewatch through Moodle, right up until the end of the State Exams.

Can I change my subject or class time during the year?

Yes. We allow class changes up to Easter, subject to availability. Contact our office on 01 661 3511 to arrange a change.
