Welcome to Week 5 of The Buzz Newsletter!
Maths Results
We are delighted to share the news, that two students obtained full marks, managing to get all 6 questions correct in the first round of the Maths Olympiad 2026-2027. Congratulations to Xiaowen Wang (6th year) and David Ziqi Dai (4th year) on your incredible scores! We are also very proud to have a further seven students achieve 5 out of 6. Congratulations to Daniel Ogundipe (6th year), Yuan Yin (6th year), Kunxiao Zhang (6th year), Linzhe Song (5th year), Kaixin Mia Lai (5th year), Glenn Heaton (5th year) and Bowen Blake Hou (5th year).
All nine students will receive an invitation to take part in training at Maynooth University or UCD in the hope that they may qualify to represent Ireland next summer in Budapest at the International Mathematical Olympiad
(IMO) 2027. Well done to everyone who took part. It was great to see so many attend, and thank you to Oliver Murphy for organising the first round of the competition.
Canteen
Our Canteen is located just past our 19-20 building, on the same side, immediately after the Hatch Street junction. Look out for The Institute blue Canteen sign. The school canteen is only for Institute students and staff. Check out this week’s specials below.
Timetable Changes
As we settled into the new school year and our wonderful extracurricular staff finalised their academic commitments, there have been a few changes to our extracurricular timetable. Please check out the timetable below for the day, time and location of your favourite activities.
New this week: We have added Self-defence and Yoga to the timetable due to popular demand – enjoy! Please note, we have had to remove Bridge from the timetable for now, we will let you know in The Buzz and on the digi screens, if we can accommodate it later in the year.
Guidance Team
We hope that all 4th and 5th year students enjoyed their Wellbeing Workshop with Jane last Friday and that you came away with some useful hints and tips on how to support your wellbeing. We encourage all students to take some time to rest and recharge this coming Friday 25th of September.
UCAS
UCAS applications – internal school deadline Monday 28th of September. The guidance team is currently supporting 6th year students with their UCAS applications. The school deadline date for applying to Oxford, Cambridge, and for any courses in Medicine, Veterinary, and Dentistry in the UK is Monday 28th of September 2026.
Please email either ucas27@instituteofeducation.ie or ucas2027@instituteofeducation.ie to request a UCAS guidance meeting as soon as possible if you have not already done so. Prior to your UCAS guidance appointment, it would be hugely beneficial to have a copy of your personal statement with you and that you have started the process of completing the various stages of your UCAS application. The buzzword will be entered by the guidance counsellor onto your phone/laptop at the meeting.
Guidance Talks
Studying Law will be the topic for the Lunchtime Talks this Wednesday, September 23rd. All welcome! 4th and 5th year students attend from 11 – 11:50am in H1-0. 6th year students attend from 12:30 – 1:20pm in H1-1. As always, you are more than welcome to bring your lunch. Have a great week ahead!

This Wednesday, September 23rd, we have a Masterclass in Chemistry with Ali Fox. Topic: Atomic Structure & Electron Arrangement. It is for 5th & 6th years and is online at 5pm. Link is on your Moodle.
This Wednesday, September 23rd, we have a Masterclass in English with David Enright. Topic: Personal Essay,
Paper 1. It is for 5th & 6th years and is in person at 6pm in Room G-8.
