Ireland’s first ever full-time virtual school for senior-cycle students has been launched by The Institute of Education in Dublin, providing a safe environment that will help young people right across Ireland reach their academic potential.
Following an investment of €2.5million, the Institute now hosts Europe’s largest secondary school installation for streamed and recorded e-learning.
The state-of-the-art platform allows students to access their full timetable of classes live from anywhere. Classes are delivered virtually, both via a live stream or available as recorded lessons through the dedicated learning management system, with all 39 of The Institute of Education’s classrooms now equipped with cutting-edge video and sound-recording technology that has been installed to deliver a high-calibre virtual learning experience. Offering unrivalled flexibility, students have the option to take ownership of their learning and tailor their virtual timetable to maximise their academic capabilities.
The Institute of Education will host a virtual open evening on Thursday, 22nd October to outline the details of this innovative programme and always on e-learning structure to prospective students and their families.
Speaking about the opportunities this new technology offers to students right across the country, whose pathway to education has been disrupted as a result of COVID-19, Yvonne O’Toole, Principal at The Institute of Education, said: “The Institute has innovation in its DNA and once again we are proud to play a leading role in the creative delivery of excellence in education. As a school, we always place the student at the centre of everything we do and continuously adapt our programmes to deliver the best educational outcomes for them. Our new full-time virtual school programme, a first in secondary-school learning, is very much in keeping with this.
“Through the introduction of a fully digital solution we’re safeguarding education ensuring that no matter where you are located, it is now possible to be a full-time student at The Institute of Education on Leeson Street in Dublin and avail of tuition delivered by our exceptional teachers. Students will also have access to a range of additional supports including Year Heads, Guidance and Wellbeing teams.
Commenting on the market leading innovations available at the school, Peter Kearns, Director at the Institute of Education, said: “We are very excited to make virtual full-time secondary school a reality. In just the few weeks since we brought our virtual school online, the platform has already captured and streamed over 2,000 hours of live classes. Recordings of these classes have been viewed by students over 13,600 times.”
Kearns continued: “We understand that for some students, particularly repeat Leaving Cert students, returning to school may pose significant challenges this year, but students attending our school remotely will be able to continue their academic journey with absolute certainty, and as always enjoy the excellence in education and teaching that is the hallmark of the Institute. They’ll never have to worry about missing classes due to Covid-19-related school closures, extreme weather conditions or even sickness. All of their classes will be available for them to access from home at any time, and their education with us is guaranteed to be reliable, consistent and high-quality.”
The new facility provides a unique, pioneering educational resource to students, allowing them to rewind to key moments of classroom learnings, submit assessments online, and to access the Institute’s famous class notes. Students are also able to contact teachers through the system to raise questions following the class. Additional virtual tutorials will be offered to enable students to receive further clarification on the topics covered in class. Students will also be supported by the Institute Guidance team and dedicated support staff and will have the option to participate in the Institute’s extra-curricular activities, wellness and sporting framework.
