From September 2020 incoming 5th year students at The Institute of Education will have the option to study Leaving Certificate Computer Science. The Institute of Education has partnered with The Academy of Code, Ireland’s leading centre for Tech learning, to provide this offering. The Academy of Code’s tutors hail from a range of academic and tech backgrounds and possess extensive experience in the delivery of coding classes to students.
Speaking about this new offering in the school Yvonne O’ Toole, Principal, The Institute of Education said “The Institute of Education is very excited to offer students the opportunity to study Leaving Certificate Computer Science. We are living in an increasingly tech-led society, with technology playing an essential role in all aspects of modern life. The necessity for students to possess an understanding of the principles of computer science is more pertinent now than ever before. As a subject Leaving Certificate Computer Science will equip students with essential technological skills and know-how which will be hugely beneficial to them in their future careers”.
Tom Maher from The Academy of Code added “With the growing demand globally for third level computer graduates, Leaving Cert Computer Science is an ideal step on the pathway to a very rewarding career”.
This view is shared by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook who in May 2019 said “An understanding of computer science is becoming increasingly essential in today’s world. Our national competitiveness depends upon our ability to educate our children—and that includes our girls—in this critical field”.
The addition of Computer Science brings to the number of subjects on offer to students at The Institute of Education to 26. You can read more about this new subject, here.
