The Buzz Weekly Newsletter Week 31
Welcome to Week 31 of The Buzz Newsletter!

It’s Week 31 of The Buzz Newsletter! Congratulations to 5th Year students Tommy Little and Lochlann Wright who won the Medium Club Pennant at the Head of the River Race (HoRR) 2025 on the Thames in London on Saturday 22nd March. They took part in a team of 8 with their club Neptune Rowing Club. HoRR is one of the largest rowing events in the world. With up to 400 crews and 3200 athletes taking part, it is an incredible spectacle and an amazing achievement to win. Well done guys!

Congratulations to 6th Year student Sofia Hillebrenner who travelled to Stockholm recently for the North European Music Competition of Jugend Musiziert. Sofia made it through to the Regional competitions in January , giving her the opportunity to take part in the State competitions. At state level in Stockholm, Sofia won first prize in the solo Cello in the 2007-2008 age group. ‘Jugend Musiziert’ (Youth Makes Music) has been staged both for soloists and for chamber music ensembles since 1963. Well done Sofia!

With our 6th Year students settling into serious study mode for the upcoming Leaving Certificate exams, there are some options being offered in libraries at third level institutions:

  • TU Dublin are offering a Free Leaving Cert Study Programme at the libraries at each of their 5 campuses from 26th May – 24th June at Grangegorman, Aungier Street, Blanchardstown, Bolton Street and Tallaght.
  • Details of the UCD Library 2025 Leaving Certificate Student Study Programme will also be available in May.

A huge congratulations to our students who competed in the Irish Maths Teachers Association (IMTA) Competition 2025. More than 500 teams fought in the regionals for a place in the final, with only 40 teams progressing to the final in Portlaoise. The Institute had three teams in the final. Two of our teams finished in a fantastic tie for 14th place. Our third team of Tianci Yan, Qiyu Zhang, Kent (Liyuan) Liu, and Justin Li finished joint first with Oatlands College and progressed to a tiebreak. Our team emerged victorious with a perfect 10/10 score in the tiebreak – the first perfect score in the history of the competition! This is the first time The Institute has claimed this prize, and will now have the honour of holding The George Boole Cup for the year. Well done to our fantastic students and their teachers; Andy Quinn, Adam Goodwin and above all Oliver Murphy who has championed this competition and helmed our teams the whole way through.
