European Summer Language Courses

Improve your French, Spanish & German language skills on one of our European Summer Language courses this July. Taught by our experienced and skilled teachers, these two week courses are designed to improve oral and written fluency, expression and comprehension in an immersive classroom environment.

French (H)

Due to the popularity of the French course there are two different classes available, one for 5th year and one for 6th year students. Please specify your preference at time of booking.

6th Year Course:

The aim of this course is to cover all four competencies necessary for success in the Leaving Certificate French exam: Aural, Oral, Reading and writing

All aspects of the exam will be covered, including:

  • Oral exam
    Focus on exam requirements and day-to-day communication.
  • Aural comprehension
    Practice with audio files and exam tapes.
  • Writing
    Reaction piece, diary extract, formal and informal letter, e-mail and narrative.
  • Reading comprehension
    Introduction to journalistic and literary styles of text.
  • Grammar
    Writing techniques needed for the examination.

 

5th Year Course:

The aim of this course is to build a strong foundation for 5th year students in French grammar. Students will learn how to structure sentences, with special emphasis on exam requirements.

All aspects of the exam paper will be covered, including:

  • Oral work.
  • Listening comprehension.
  • Reading comprehension.
  • Written production
    Letters, emails, notes, diary entries and reaction pieces.
  • Past exam papers
    Focus on the format of the exam and techniques required.

 

German (H)

The aim of this course is to enhance student proficiency in the German langauge, with special emphasis on all aspects of the Leaving Certificate exam.

Topics from:

  • Oral work
    Exam format, general questions, role play, picture sequence or project work.
    Option to discuss a film or novel in the exam.
  • Aural comprehension
    Practice using CDs and authentic listening material.
    Focus on listening skills required for the aural exam.
  • Reading comprehension
    Introduction to both journalistic and literary styles of texts.
    Focus on comprehension, answering skills and techniques.
  • Letter writing, short essay and opinion topics
  • Grammar
    Writing techniques needed for the exam.
    Formal grammar section covered in detail.

 

Spanish (H)

This course is designed to prepare students for all aspects of the Leaving Certificate Higher Level Spanish exam.

Topics from:

  • Oral exam
    Exam requirements and day to day communication.
  • Aural comprehension
    Practice using CDs and exam tapes.
  • Reaction piece, diary extract, formal and informal letter, e-mail or fax and narrative
  • Reading comprehensions
    Introduction to both journalistic and literary styles of text.
  • Grammar
    Writing techniques needed for the exam.

  • Credit Card payments accepted
  • 10% reduction for the second and subsequent members of the same family, attending the same courses. Please contact our office to avail of this discount.
  • Fees are non-transferable

Q: Can I be admitted to class without my card?

A: It is every student’s personal responsibility to ensure they have their card with them each time they attend classes at the Institute. We have the right to refuse admission to any student who does not comply with this regulation. If you have misplaced or have not received your card please come into our reception and we will issue you with a replacement or temporary card.

Q: Is there a place I can get lunch?

A: Yes, we have an onsite canteen serving a variety of sandwiches and drinks. Also, locally, there are sandwich bars and shops.

Q: My son/daughter is unwell and cannot attend. Can I have a refund?

A: No, there are no refunds. However, if you return the student’s admission card to us immediately, along with a short letter of explanation, at the discretion of management, a credit note can be put on the student’s file for future use or for use by a sibling.

Q: My son/daughter cannot attend the course. Can we buy the notes?

A: No. Teaching is a central part of all our courses. The notes are to facilitate recall and revision of the day’s work covered by the teacher.

Q: Am I entitled to the notes from classes that I was absent from?

A: Yes, however you must deal directly with your teacher in relation to this.
