Earlier this year, we brought you news that, after several years of representing Ireland at youth level, our very own 6th Year student Ava Canning had been selected to join the Irish Women’s Cricket Squad.
We are delighted to say that she will be part of the Irish squad heading to Spain this week for the T20 World Cup European Qualifier. The event will take place at La Manga Club in Spain and will be a round-robin format. There are 5 other countries competing for the exclusive top and only qualifying spot for the 2022 ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifier tournament.
Here is a link to the official Press Release made by Cricket Ireland.
We spoke to Ava who told us a little more about what this means to her:
“I am really looking forward to travelling to Spain as a member of the Irish Women’s Cricket Squad, where we will play 5 other European nations in the World Cup European Qualifier. If all goes to plan, a good outcome in Spain next week will mean Ireland will be one step closer to qualifying for the next Cricket World Cup and I hope I can continue to be part of that exciting journey.”
We are excited for both Ava and her Cricket Ireland teammates and we hope they can outperform the competition and progress to the T20 Cricket World Cup next year.
Best of luck Ava from all of us at The Institute of Education!
