Congratulations to 5th Year Student Ilona Lowney, who recently took part in the Young Scientist Exhibition which took place in the RDS Dublin.
The objective of Ilona’s project ‘The Tofu Takeover’ was to discover the health impact of a vegan/vegetarian diet in particular in regarding vascular health, cancer and diabetes. Ilona also carried out a survey investigating Irish attitudes towards a vegan/vegetarian diet.
The findings showed we have a negative attitude towards and poor awareness of a vegan/vegetarian diet. This is despite the fact that the study found that a plant based diet decreases the rate and the severity of the illnesses investigated, which would also reduce the burden on our healthcare system.
