Welcome to Week 20 of The Buzz Newsletter!
It’s Week 20 of The Buzz Newsletter and this week is Wellbeing Week at The Institute! There is a whole host of activities planned for this week, for a boost of good feeling and relaxation. Check out the timetable in your monthly calendar and on the screens around school to see what’s happening. There is something for everyone; from movies, meditation, quizzes and morning walks. There will also be nutrition and wellbeing talks throughout the week.
Congratulations to 6th Year student Ai Lin Sun who won the Ursula Uí Chuinneagáin Bursary for Young Pianists 2024 in the Royal Academy of Music on the 20th December 2024. After a preliminary round, there were 6 finalists chosen to compete and Ai Lin was the overall winner, awarded both the €2,000 bursary and perpetual trophy. Well done Ai Lin!
Congratulations to all our students who qualified for the BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2025, which took place in the RDS last week. Special thanks to Catriona Hendry for supporting the students and attending the exhibition. It is a fantastic achievement to get to the finals of the competition. Met Éireann had a particular in Joel Emmanuel’s project, which investigated a framework to measure hurricane intensity using storm surge and rainfall as additional factors for evaluation.
Shaunak Mohapatra’s project on using machine learning for non-invasive neural semantic decoding won the AMD award and also first prize in the individual Senior Technology category. Conor O’Neill and Alexander Vysotski’s group project in the Senior Technology category ‘Enhancing adaptive environments’ won the Meta award and also first prize in the Technology category. Congratulations also to Catriona’s daughter Mia who presented a very interesting project on invasive species in a native Irish habitat. Mia won a display award in her first year at Young Scientist.

- 17th January: The final day to register for the HPAT exam.
- 18th January: UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy Open Day.
Masterclasses:
- This Monday 13th, there is a Biology masterclass with Wesley Hammond. It is for 5th & 6th Years and is in room 4-8 at 3:30pm.
- This Monday 13th, there is an English masterclass with Emma Grealy. It is for 5th & 6th Years and is live online at 6pm. The link is on your Moodle.
