Normally, throughout the year, there would be lots of Model United Nations debates and conferences happening that our students would get involved in. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, during the 2020/21 academic year, almost all of these events had been cancelled or postponed. While this was the case, the largest Irish event, St. Andrew’s International MUN (SAIMUN) trialed an online weekend conference for younger students. We had four 4th Years take part in this new and innovative format: Edward DeBono, Emily-Faye Xantho, Sophie Shaw and Dunah CuiSun. They represented the country of Saudi Arabia.
The event took place on the 7th, 8th and 9th of May. we spoke to some of the students who took part and this is what they had to say about the event
“I found the overall experience interesting and in particular the cooperation between delegates was engaging. I would go next year if it’s on.” – Edward DeBono, 4th Year.
“I found SAIMUN to be very interesting and I really enjoyed it! I particularly enjoyed the lobbying of the different topics and the crisis debate, where I got to know some of the other delegates better and their relevant countries’ views on Iran etc. I would definitely go to any other Model UN conferences next year. Thank you for signing us up!” – Sophie Shaw, 4th Year.
